Vacuum Cleaner Systems for use in Division 2 - IECEX / ATEX Zone 2 & 22 Conditions

1- DIVISION 2 ZONE 2 & 22 HAZARDOUS (AREAS) LOCATIONS:

Areas in which an explosive atmosphere is not likely to occur under normal operating conditions.

Definitions for combustible dusts hazardous locations

  • Class II Division 2 (NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE NFPA 70, Article 500)
  • Zone 22 (NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE NFPA 70, Article 506)
  • Zone 22 (ATEX Directive 1999/92/EC, Annex I)
  • Zone 22 (IEC 60079-10-2)

Definitions for Flammable Gases, Vapors or Liquids hazardous locations

  • Class I, Division 2. (NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE NFPA 70, Article 500)
  • Class I, Zone 2. (NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE NFPA 70, Article 505)
  • Zone 2 (ATEX Directive 1999/92/EC, Annex I)
  • Zone 2 (IEC 60079-10-1)

2- EQUIPMENT PROTECTION LEVEL

As per IEC 60079-0

EPL - EQUIPMENT PROTECTION LEVEL

Level of protection assigned to equipment based on its likelihood of becoming a source of ignition and distinguishing the differences between explosive gas atmospheres, explosive dust atmospheres, and the explosive atmospheres in mines susceptible to firedamp

NOTE: The equipment protection level may optionally be employed as part of a complete risk assessment of an installation, see IEC 60079-14.

EPL Dc

Equipment for explosive dust atmospheres, having an "enhanced" level of protection, which is not a source of ignition in normal operation and which may have some additional protection to ensure that it remains inactive as an ignition source in the case of regular expected occurrences (for example failure of a lamp)

EPL Gc

Equipment for explosive gas atmospheres, having an "enhanced" level of protection, which is not a source of ignition in normal operation and which may have some additional protection to ensure that it remains inactive as an ignition source in the case of regular expected occurrences (for example failure of a lamp)

3- DEGREE OF PROTECTION PROVIDED BY ENCLOSURE AS PER IEC 60529, IEC 60079-0 & IEC 60079-31

Vacuum Cleaner Systems with a degree of protection of :

  • IP 54 for dust explosive atmospheres
  • IP 55 for gas explosive atmospheres

NOTE: Refers only to Vacuum Cleaner Systems for use in Division 2 - IECEX /ATEX Zone 2 & 22 Conditions

4- AREAS WHERE THE EXPLOSION HAZARD IS NOT SIGNIFICANT

As little as 1/32 of an inch (0.8 mm) of organic dust over 5 percent of a room's surface area presents a significant explosion hazard, according to NFPA 654, ''Prevention of Fire and Dust Explosions from the Manufacturing, Processing, and Handling of Combustible Particulate Solids.''

(See NFPA 654, 6.1.3)

5- MANUFACTURING PRACTICES FOR THE RECOVERY OF COMBUSTIBLE DUSTS AND FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS IN DIVISION 2 - ZONES 2 & 22 CONDITIONS

The HAZ-LOC PORTABLE VACUUM CLEANERS ORGANIZATION INC. established the following:

Standard Vacuum Cleaner Systems Providing only an Enhanced Equipment Protection Level

  • Cannot recover combustible metal dusts

  • Can only recover combustible dusts (excluding metal dusts), flammable liquids and Ignitable Fibers and Flyings in areas where the explosion hazard is not significant. (Division 2 - IECEX / ATEX Zones 2 & 22 Conditions)
